Bias and Prejudice

Thinking skills: Bias and prejudice
In the Thinking skills class we had to read a unit of bias, the language of it and prejudice. After reading this we had to solve two activities realted to these topics.

1) In Item A we can notice the prejudice by the way the Germans blamed the jews for every problem in Germany, even some were unreasonable. Hitler was the main one who expresed the prejudice to the Jews. In Item B prejudice to the Jews is shown by distorting the reality and presenting the Jews as the killers and guilties.
The evidence they contain that shows that the prejudice is irrational is the truth. By knowning the context and the history of the Nazi Germany, we know that the sources show distortion and irrationality since they aren't truth.
They are not credible at all because they are biased. They are made in a particular way to persuade people to believe they are in that way when they actually aren't. They are not credible since the context shows that the hisotry of the Jews wasn't as the Nazi Germans saw it.

2) The use of the language in the items indicates bias because the British media uses postive vocabulary to describe their man and negative vocabulary to describe the iraquies. This shows how obviously they are in the British side. They discribe their man as "professionals, confident and loyal" and the iraquíes as "brainwashed, mad dogs and ruthless".  Moreoever, they say they neutralise.

Because it is kind of obvious that a country is going to defend their side. Britain is not going to talk amazing things about Iraq because in this case it's the enemy. As a consequence, the credibility is reduced.

MAD MEN:The Smoking pitch

In the class of thinking skills we see a video call Mad Men that is about a company of cigarettes, that they wont that people continued buying and that people not think that cigarettes kill, but the company give two ideas that you can see in these question.

1-Identify some of the uested interst in this scene. How do these work?
The company want people to choose them instead of other companies what is more they wont people to keep on buying their products even though they are being said not to be healthy.

2-Why is Peter ideas rejected and Dom idea accepted?
The idea of Peter was to persuaded people of buying luchy strikes ,but it accepted the fact that they were health -harming.In the other hand Dom idea explain their agarehes with harmless and friendly ideas by saying they were toasted what is more, while Peter´s idea linked their product of death. The idea of Dom suggested that even thougth all other companies toasted they cigarettes,by they  claiming it it gave a feeling as if it was a fact that made lucky strikes healthier than the others ones.

3-Find an old tabacoo advertising picture and analyse it in terms of vested interest and distortion of the truth
The avertising links doctorswith camel cigarettes that satisfies 2 vested interets.Doctors choose camel insted of other brorts, they suggest that their product is better and healthier than others. At the same time,if doctors smoke it,them they bust the myth around cigarettes wether it is more lifely for these not to be true, having doctors buying it does not make cigarettes effect on people health less dreadfut.

Helpin Students with spoken presentation

This is a proposal that we did in the class of ELT,that explian how we can help students in the orals presentation.

INTRODUCTION
The principal aims of this proposal is to provide solution for the students that had problems with the oral presentation. The final section makes recommendations as how to solve the following problems.
SPEAKING PROBLEMS
Students generally have problems with speaking as lack of fluency and pronunciation.Talking about fluency students loose the idea of the message that they are trying to convey, making the delivery incoherent.Concerning pronunciation, students lack the knowledge of phonetics,so they just guess the pronunciation.
UNNECESSARY INFORMATION
There has been notable problems with the researche and selection of unnecesary information.Students look for the eassest web pages without repetition about the quality of the information.Howover not only are there difficulties with the selection of information, but also with the images and videos chosen.Students over use images or information.Consenquetly, the presentation turns to be over with visuals and the students get distracted.
INCONVENIENCES IN THE PREMISES
During these days, there are remarkable inconveniences in the premises with the necessary factor to deliver a presentation. The lack of interest conection is a crucial factor since if it is an online presentation are needs interest connection. Also, there are technical problems serch as broken projectors and deporable conditions of the presentations area.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Many students can be done so as to solve all the problems mentioned above,I would make the following recommendations.
-Helping students to became self confident
-Practices and learning about phonetics to solve speaking problems.
-Providing students the nesessary skills for chosing the correct material and research on reliable sources.
A combination of these recommendations will show a notable and diferent result on the student´s attitude when deliver a presentation and also in this one itself.

Unit 1: Truth and Credibility

THINKING SKILLS

In the school Newlands, we have a new subject called thinking skills, where we study Critical thinking. The skills required to analyse and evaluate arguments are taught in this subject. The term argument consists to convence people about something specific, they may have indicators words. To support a certain point of view or a particular belief, we need evidence, if not the argument is not reliable. Moreover, we ought to make a judgement about the credibility of the evidence in each argument.
In order to do this judgement, we need to focus on the source, which is where the evidence comes from. The source might be an eyewitness, a TV Programme or an article in a magazine and etc. Furthermore, we must use a credibility criteria. This criteria can be divided as it follows:

Neutrality : It consists of a source which is impartial  and which does not have a motive to distort evidence for its own benefit.
Vested Interest: When a source takes a side and manipulates or selects certain parts of the evidence for its own benefit. However, the existence of a vested interest does not mean that evidence will be distorted or that individuals will lie.
Bias:  having a vested interest may lead to bias, which means having a preference for something or supporting a particular point of view. Biased viewpoints reduce the credibility of a source
Expertise: Consists of evidence which is highly credible due to the fact that it is provided by an expert. Nevertheless, expertise is only credible if it fits the situation.
Reputation: It consists of the position of a source. The higher the reputation of a source, the more credible it is seen to be. Nonetheless, a reputation does not mean that the source provides accurate information.
Observation and eyewitness accounts: Eye witnesses are very credible as they have seen the events. However, many times their credibility is lost since ,by retelling the story that they saw, they tend to forget many details.
Corroboration: This makes reference to pieces of evidence which support each other. In general, corroboration increases the credibility of evidence.
Selectivity and representativeness: Many campaign groups only select evidence which supports their views. This one-sided election of evidence is seen to reduce their credibility as sources. Moreover, the presentation of unrepresentative information can weaken the credibility of a source.
Context:  it makes reference to the setting or situation in which evidence is produced. When assessing credibility, its important that we analyse the whole context since there might be factors which can affect the evidence provided.

To conclude with this Unit,we can say that a evidence didn`t have to be true in order to be credible and the credibility isn´t synonymous of truth.

Asesinato a distancia

Daniel Hernandez mató a todas esas personas.
